London, UK, 28 April 2009 – Spring barley growers are reminded to remove weed burdens promptly where they have yet to apply a treatment.
Trevor Smith of Rotam explains: “With more spring barley planted this year, it is not certain what effect this may have on prices for growers not on a contract. So the priority must be to protect crop yields while investing in inputs as carefully as possible, in order to maximise margins. A key part of this is to make sure competitive broad-leaved weed populations are controlled early.
“Owing to varying sowing dates, soil and weather conditions, barley is at very different stages around the regions and some will already have received a herbicide treatment,” he continues. “Other growers should now be assessing the specific weeds present, choosing their herbicide and planning to spray while weeds are at the optimum growth stage.”
Savvy (metsulfuron-methyl) is one herbicide option, new this spring, which has effective foliar and root activity on a broad range of chickweeds, mayweeds and most other common broad-leaved weeds and volunteers.
“Another herbicide to consider if polygonums or other tough weeds are a problem is Ergon (metsulfuron-methyl + thifensulfuron-methyl), which uses its additional active ingredient to control weeds like knotgrass, orache and fat hen,” Trevor says.
The labels on both Savvy and Ergon allow their use in sequence or in a tank mixture with other sulfonylureas and ALS-inhibiting herbicides, including Atlantis.
